Spring Cleaning

2020 Spring Cleaning Guide

Happy spring! Time to start creating that spring cleaning checklist. Since most of us are home right now, it’s a good opportunity to work on cleaning and decluttering the house. If you’re planning on moving within the next six months and want your home to look nice for showings, I’d suggest beginning the process now. Here are a handful of things I focus on when spring cleaning!

Declutter
Clutter collects a lot of dust, which impacts breathing and well-being. Is an 80s sequin jacket really worth keeping if you haven’t worn it since Bush was president? Probably not. Spring cleaning is a fantastic time to declutter closets, files, junk drawers, and basements.

I suggest creating at least two boxes, one labeled “Donations” and another labeled “Trash.” Although you might have to wait until the coronavirus crisis is over to donate anything, you will have that box ready to go when the time is right!

Start Cleaning From the Ceiling Down
If you’ve ever swept your floor before dusting or vacuuming cobwebs, you know why this is important. You don’t want to complete tasks twice! Start by taking care of cobwebs, then dust off furniture, then clean up the floor. Hopefully, if you’ve already decluttered, you’ll have less to dust.

Don’t Forget Windows and Walls
Give the windows and walls some love, too! It’s amazing how much filth they can collect over a year, especially if you have young kids or animals. Use a damp rag to wipe down walls and blinds, and be sure to give the screens a gentle wipe, too. As for the glass on the windows, simple water and a squeegee ought to do it.

Kitchens and Bathrooms
Now might be a good time to take a look at your shower curtains and wash or replace them. You may also want to take this time to go through your medicine cabinet and throw away anything that has expired. As for your kitchen, pay extra special attention to your pantry and refrigerator. Throw away any expired or unlikely-to-be-used items and wipe down surfaces. Try to remember to remove the refrigerator drawers for cleaning, too!

Spring cleaning can be a lot of work, but I bet your mind will feel fresher afterward!
