Greater Heights Neighborhoods
Do you want to live in Houston Heights, also known as The Heights? Do you know where Houston Heights is located, and are you aware that there are several other neighborhoods nearby that make up the Greater Heights neighborhoods? The neighborhoods that make up the Greater Heights are part of Super Neighborhood 15 – an area where groups work together to plan and address the needs of their communities.
Greater Heights Super Neighborhood 15
The Greater Heights is comprised of eight (8) distinct neighborhoods centered around Houston Heights. The neighborhoods include: Houston Heights, Brooke Smith, Proctor Plaza (Norhill), Shady Acres, East Sunset Heights, Sunset Heights, Clark Pines, and Woodland Heights. Interestingly enough, Cottage Grove, Lazy Brook, and Timber Grove are not part of the Greater Heights. Neither are areas North of 610 (Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, and Independence Heights), or South of I-10 (such as Washington Corridor.)
Houston Heights
Houston Heights is a group of three (3) historic districts: Houston Heights West, Houston Heights East, and Houston Heights South. Roughly, the boundaries are Shepherd Drive to the West, Heights Boulevard to the East, 20th Street to the North, and 4th Street to the South. This area has a variety of homes including Queen Ann, Craftsman, and Victorian styles that are historic or newer, and some townhouses.
Brooke Smith
Brooke Smith isn’t a historic district in the area, but they have deed restrictions prohibiting the division of lots! So, townhouses aren’t something you see in Brooke Smith, and currently this is one of the most affordable neighborhoods to purchase a free standing home in the Greater Heights. The neighborhood is roughly bounded by Cavalcade Street to the North, Studewood Street to the West, I-45 to the East and Arline Road to the South. If you have ever been to D&T Drive Inn, you’ve been to Brooke Smith.
Proctor Plaza (Norhill)
Proctor Plaza is more commonly known as Norhill, and nearly every home in the neigborhood has historic designation. If you’re interested in a neighborhood with a lot of charm that isn’t going away, this is the one for you. Although, homes are pricey over here! The area is L-shaped and boundaries include Studewood to the West, Key Street and Pecore Street to the South, Moss Street on the East and Fugate Street to the North, as well as Michaux Street to the East, and North Main Street. Homes over here are mostly one and two story Craftsman bungalows, but many have additions in the back.
Shady Acres
Shady Acres is located in the Northwest area of the Greater Heights. It is just East of T C Jester Boulevard, and just South of 610. It is also bounded by Shepherd Drive to the East and W. 16th Street to the South. This area has a large amount of new construction, mostly 2 and 3 story townhomes.
Sunset Heights and East Sunset Heights
My home, Sunset Heights is just West of East Sunset Heights, and I will discuss these two as one neighborhood: Sunset Heights. The area is one of the most affordable in the Greater Heights, and is located on the far Northeast end. The neighborhood boundaries include Yale Street to the West, Airline Road to the West, 610 to the North, and 20th Street to the South. The area is full of old bungalows and newer townhomes. It offers close proximity to Houston Heights proper and convenient freeway access for people commuting North for work.
Clark Pines
Clark Pines is a teeny neighborhood near between Shady Acres and Cottage Grove. Made up of just a few streets, it has boundaries of T C Jester Boulevard to the West, Dian Street to the East, 15th Street to the North and 14th Street to the South.
Woodland Heights
Woodland Heights is possibly one of the most recognizable of the Greater Heights neighborhoods due to being the home of Lights in the Heights. This neighborhood is a historic district, and with Houston Heights, has some of the most expensive real estate. The boundaries roughly include Julian Street to the West, Omar Street to the North, Morrison Street to the East, and Byrne Street to the South. Homes in the area are mostly one and two story bungalows.
