Halloween During COVID-19
Halloween decorations are in the stores and Houston’s porches are looking creepier by the minute, but what how will we celebrate Halloween during COVID-19? Many people are waiting to buy or make costumes until they have a better idea of how the virus will affect festivities, but there’s no need to forego celebrating all together! Here are a few alternatives to in-person parties and traditional trick-or-treating. I hope that whatever you do this Halloween, you have a fun and safe time!
Virtual Costume Contest
Everyone is using Zoom these days, right? Here’s one more reason to! Zoom, as well as other video conferencing platforms, like Skype, are great tools to celebrate safely. Organize a virtual event with your friends and family through Facebook, email, text message, or any other way you deem most convenient. To make things more fun, you may want to organize awards such as “Most Likely to Befriend a Ghost” or “Best Zombie Pop Star.” You might even give gift cards to the winners!
Or if virtual isn’t your thing…
Car Parade Costume Contest
The kids will absolutely love a car parade costume contest. Here’s how it works:
Have the kids line up at a social distance on an agreed-upon, safe street. The judges will drive by and observe (it’s best to have someone else in the driver’s seat!) all the kids’ costumes and maybe even take some photos.
Judges can cast their votes online or in-person at the end of the parade route and announce winners in whichever way is most convenient for everyone. At this point in the pandemic, though, it’s a safe bet that awards take a backseat to the social activity!
Reverse Trick-or-Treating & Neighborhood Drive-Bys
While this might be a little harder to pull off, in reverse trick-or-treating, kids stay at home and adults bring the candy to them. The kids could stand on the porch in costume while passerby throw candy out of their car windows parade-style, or friends and family could drop off packages of candy and other Halloween goodies while the kids stay inside. Perhaps while indoors, the kids could watch scary movies or orchestrate a family photo shoot based on their favorite Halloween movies! This method limits contact and offers a lot of fun twists to families who want to safely celebrate Halloween during the pandemic.
