History: Former Virginia native Dr. William Thomas Dickey moved to Houston in the 1880s and later purchased 460 acres of land. He dreamed of dividing it up into subdivisions and developing thriving communities, but had to sell most of the land before he passed away. His son began to slowly develop the remaining plots in 1931. By the end of World War II, most of the land had been sold to owners for new construction. Today, the area is deed-restricted and looked after by an active homeowner’s association that values the historic charm of the area.

Shopping: Since this community is situated in River Oaks, it offers some truly great shopping. Residents can choose from nearby River Oaks Shopping Center and Shepherd Square Shopping Center, or travel to the Galleria or Highland Village just a short drive away. While you won’t find much in the way of shopping until you reach the neighborhood’s borders, there’s no shortage of places to go from there!

Community: The homeowner’s association has worked hard to maintain the historic charm of the existing homes in this area. Unlike in many other Houston neighborhoods, you won’t see a lot of classic homes knocked down for new construction. However, homes here are typically luxuriously renovated and highly sought-after. Due to the neighborhood’s popularity and small size, it can be difficult to find a property here.

Culture: Avalon Place primarily attracts buyers who like having the benefits of living in an urban area while actually living in a residential one. Although residents may have to travel outside of the community to partake in activities, the neighborhood is small enough to make this a non-issue. Residents often travel to Highland Village, the Galleria, and throughout River Oaks to shop, and Kirby Drive offers several great places to grab a bite to eat.
