Texas Medical Center

Texas Medical Center (TMC) is a small neighborhood in Houston well-known for its over 60 medical facilities, including the largest medical complex in the world. It’s a true cityscape with nearby access to excellent parks and schools, and plenty of jobs for medical and healthcare employees.

 

Accessibility: This neighborhood may not have everything you need within walking distance, but with a Bike Score of 76, it is one of the most bikeable neighborhoods in Houston. It also has good public transportation with a Transit Score of 65.

 

Parks, Recreation, and Greenspaces: Although Texas Medical Center is known for its dense cityscape atmosphere, there are greenspaces within the neighborhood and just outside of it. In the neighborhood, parkgoers can enjoy the MD Anderson Prairie Park or walk the Brays Bayou Greenway Trail. Directly to the north in the Museum District is the famous Hermann Park, a massive park loaded with hiking and biking trails and featuring the Houston Zoo and Miller Outdoor Theatre.

 

Commute: Since public transportation in the TMC area is good, residents don’t have to worry too much about having a bad commute. Highways 288, 610, 59, and 90 also provides highway access to those who need it.

 

Texas Medical Center Appreciation Values: Residents of this area enjoy very positive property appreciation values over time, with a 10-year appreciation value of 23.53%. This makes TMC a great neighborhood to live in long-term.

History: In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved the purchase of 118 acres of land from the estate of George Hermann, the namesake of Hermann Park, for a large naval hospital. Following, several other medical centers were founded in the area, including Texas Children’s Hospital. The Texas Medical Center Library was also built here and houses medical books and journals dated all the way back to 1500! Since the 1940s,  the TMC has remained a thriving community with a strong medical presence.

 

Shopping: Although this area isn’t a shopaholic’s paradise, there are communities nearby that can meet shoppers’ needs, including Rice Village and the Museum District.

 

Community: The Texas Medical Center community is known for its dedication to the medical sciences. There are at least 60 major medical facilities packed into this small neighborhood, and their workforce includes some of the brightest minds in the world. Due to the high number of patients and physicians traveling in and out of Medical Center every day, it’s considered a bustling neighborhood.

 

Culture: Due to Texas Medical Center’s reputation as a medical hub, the area sees some tourism, especially during convention season. This neighborhood employs an extremely high number of healthcare employees, making it a great place to live for anyone working in the medical or healthcare industry.
