My First Experience Using A Home Warranty

My first experience using a home warranty (or residential service contract) was relatively painless. I discovered my dishwasher wasn’t draining, and 6 days later it was fixed. I feel it important to share that I first noticed the problem on a Saturday night.

My home warranty has an online portal that makes submitting claims outside of business hours pretty easy. I simply logged in and clicked the button for submit a claim. I selected an “issue” and described the problem in the text box.

Monday morning, a representative from the home warranty called to get more details and submit my claim to one of their approved vendors. I was informed that a representative from an appliance repair company would call me within 2 days. I actually received another phone call from my home warranty later in the day. It seems the first person didn’t note that we had already talked; so, someone one was following up to make sure my claim was addressed.

Wednesday afternoon rolls around, and I haven’t heard from the appliance repair company. I called my home warranty company and notified them, and within the hour the appliance company called to schedule service. My service was scheduled for the next day between 2 and 5. Honestly, not a bad window, in my opinion.

The service technician showed up, and evaluated the situation. At first glance, he thought it was fine, and I simply didn’t know how a dishwasher operated. However, after a short conversation, he dug a little deeper, and found the problem. My dishwasher was clogged with all sorts of gunk. Honestly, the people who owned my home before me were washing some weird things in this dishwasher! After about an hour, and a $75 deductible payment, my dishwasher was working, and I was finished hand washing dishes!

The following Monday, the home warranty company called to make sure my dishwasher was serviced and working again. The customer service and follow through is impressive. I have heard horror stories about working with home warranty companies, and I feel like I might have found a unicorn.
