Tips For A Smaller Thanksgiving

Tips for a Smaller Thanksgiving During COVID-19

The CDC came out with its official guidance regarding Thanksgiving celebrations in 2020, and I’m afraid the news isn’t good. It ranked attending indoor dinners with people from outside your household, parades, fun runs, and in-store Black Friday shopping as some of the riskiest activities you can do. That’s left many people scratching their heads about how to best spend Thanksgiving this year. We thought it would be helpful to come up with tips for a smaller Thanksgiving during COVID-19. Here are just a couple ideas on how to still have an awesome Thanksgiving – even if it is different this year!

Prepare for a Smaller Gathering

If you plan to cook a Thanksgiving dinner this year, aim to only buy enough groceries to cover your immediate family. If you’re used to shopping for dozens of people, you might find this a bit odd. Buy what you can as early as possible just in case inventory runs low, and perhaps be open to a non-traditional meal! This might be a great time to try out a new dish or tradition without the pressure of performing in the kitchen for a ton of guests.

Speaking of pressure, one good thing about immediate-family-only Thanksgiving is that you might even be able to get away with dressing down a bit more. Nothing like passing the green beans while you’re wearing yoga pants, right? Think positive.

If you don’t feel like cooking at all on Thanksgiving, or if cooking a big Thanksgiving meal just isn’t really your thing, you can always grab some take-out!

Take-Out

If you don’t like becoming a sweaty, hot mess in the kitchen over one meal that rapidly comes and goes, no one would blame you for it. Fortunately, Houston’s restaurants have historically provided excellent holiday take-out. Keep an eye on these restaurants for possible upcoming announcements about Thanksgiving take-out options:

Many of Houston’s favorite events, such as the BakerRipley Houston Turkey Trot, have also gone virtual. This will certainly be a different holiday than we’re used to! I hope your Thanksgiving is safe, delicious, and filled with love and joy – no matter how you celebrate!
