Voting in Houston in 2020
Due to the pandemic, voting will look different this year. You may be voting in a different way and have stricter guidelines than usual to follow. If you’re planning on voting in Houston in 2020, I have all the details for you here!
Dates to Keep in Mind:
Those voting in person should mark their calendars for November 3rd from 7 AM to 7 PM! Make sure you register to vote by end-of-day on October 05, or you will not be eligible. Early voting begins on October 13 and ends on October 30.
If you want to apply for ballot-by-mail voting for the General Election, you must apply by October 23.
In order to vote in Houston during this election cycle, you must be 18 years or older on Election Day, be a U.S. citizen and resident of Harris County, and not have been convicted of a felony (but you may still be eligible to vote if you have completed your parole, sentence, or probation).
Where to Vote:
In case you haven’t heard, you can now vote in any location you please! This is especially good news for commuters who don’t have time to rush home from work to vote. There are more than 350 locations to choose from for Election Day voting, and over 100 locations you may go to for Early Voting. To accommodate early voters, a handful of locations are even open for 24 hours on October 29! Learn about polling locations and hours here.
Voting by Mail:
Voters who wish to cast their ballots by mail must meet some requirements in order to do so. To qualify for a mail-in ballot, you must meet one of the following criteria:
1.) Have a disability.
2.) Be confined in jail but otherwise legally eligible to vote.
3.) Not be present in Harris County for the duration of Early Voting, and on Election Day.
4.) Be age 65 or older by Election Day.
Due to the pandemic, more people will be voting by mail than ever. If you plan to vote by mail-in ballot, make sure officials receive your application by October 23.
Houston has done a lot to ensure safety at the polls this year. I hope that your voting experience goes smoothly and safely!
